THO TO HOST ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION

“TURKEY’S PIVOTAL MOMENT: ISIS, KURDS and the PKK”

Panel of experts to will address Turkey’s delicate balancing act between domestic politics, security threats in the region and the interests of the international community

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Thursday, October 1, the Turkish Heritage Organization (THO) will host a roundtable discussion at the National Press Club, “Turkey’s Pivotal Moment: ISIS, Kurds and the PKK.”

Turkey is poised to play a central role in the fight against ISIS and the Syrian conflict. The country’s decision two months ago to increase support for the U.S.-led coalition helped solidify this role.

Yet, at the same time, Turkey has seen an increase in terrorism activity in the region and the ceasefire between the Turkish government and the Kurdish terrorist group PKK has ended. This has led to an escalation of violence that needs to be addressed.

Experts will discuss these intertwined security situations at the THO roundtable event.

The panel will be moderated by Malik Mufti, chair of political science at Tufts University, and will feature Michael Reynolds, professor of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University and Dr. Joshua Walker, a fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States.
